Level 2: Command

The second level of autonomy gives a Smart Machine the ability to select the action that has to be executed by another Smart Machine or a human being. The Smart Machine is the decision maker but does not execute the action (e.g., the machine makes a decision to order more stock, which then is executed by a staff member in the store).

According to Gartner, by 2018 more than three million workers globally will be supervised by a “roboboss.” 34 By 2020 autonomous software agents outside of human control will participate in 5 percent of all economic transactions.35
